Column – Let’s Talk About that New Spider-Man Trailer!

A New Trailer for 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Has Been Unleashed

Written by J.T. Johnson

Today, I want to talk about that new trailer for “Spider-Man: Far From Home”! Before I do that, though, let’s take another look at this beautiful piece of marketing!

Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. Now, some of you might be shaking your heads saying, “Hey, wait a minute! What about Spider-Man in ‘Infinity War’?” For those who have not seen “Infinity War”, allow me to go ahead and give you a SPOILER ALERT!

During the events of “Avengers: Infinity War”, Thanos finally acquired all the Infinity Stones for his Infinity Gauntlet and snapped his fingers. He took out half of all life in the universe, meaning some of our heroes didn’t make it out, either. Spider-Man was one of those heroes that disintegrated into dust while in Tony Stark’s arms.

So, how is Spider-Man returning in yet another movie set after “Infinity War”? Well, if you honestly thought that all of the heroes who disappeared in “Infinity War” were dead, then you’re obviously not schooled in comic books. The events in “Infinity War” will largely be dealt with in “Avengers: Endgame”, set to come out on April 26.

Let’s face facts, Marvel was not going to let their recently introduced heroes such as Doctor Strange and Black Panther stay dead. The actors still have contracts and there are sequels to be made! This means that Spidey will definitely be brought back in “Endgame”. That out of the way, let’s take a look at this amazing trailer!

The trailer opens by showing that Spider-Man is a bonafide hero in New York. His Aunt May, who discovered his identity at the end of “Homecoming”, seems to also be helping him out. The big surprise is when Happy Hogan, played once again by Jon Favreau, shows up and is also helping him out. They also seem to be teasing a potential relationship between Hogan and Aunt May.

Anyway, a field trip to Europe is planned and Peter decides that Europe doesn’t need a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and leaves his suit behind. He just wants to hang out with his friends, reminding us that this is a teenager who has to deal with the enormous responsibility of being a superhero. Things start off fine enough, but soon crazy elemental enemies begin to attack and it becomes apparent that Europe may need Spider-Man after all.

That is until Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, shows up and saves the day. After this, Peter gets a surprise visit from Nick Fury, again played by Samuel L. Jackson who has been busy playing Fury not only here but also in “Captain Marvel”. It seems that Fury will be recruiting Spider-Man and giving him some new gear including that stealth suit that has been teased in leaked behind-the-scenes shots.

Gyllenhaal as Mysterio is great and they actually made him work for the film! I can’t wait to see where they take this character and it was so great to see the mask!

On top of everything, though, there are your usual action shots promising that Spider-Man will have plenty to do in the action department. Ultimately, this was a great teaser trailer. It didn’t spoil much about how Spider-Man will return in “Endgame” or how others may have returned as well. It gives us just enough to whet our appetites and it is a thrilling trailer overall.

Spider-Man had a great year in 2018 with the release of “Infinity War”, a massively successful game on the PS4 and the release of the animated film, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. If this first trailer for “Far From Home” is any indication, then Spider-Man will continue to impress audiences in 2019!
